Day of Remembrance
Type of design: print, social media, digital, marketing.
February 19th is a solemn day in the Japanese American community. On this date in 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which led to the removal of Japanese Americans from the West Coast and their relocation to incarceration camps scattered throughout the country.
Project Overview:

The Smithsonian hosts an annual Day of Remembrance event featuring members of the Asian American community. I designed material to be used throughout the museum, on the website, and in the greater Washington, DC area to promote this event. This year's panel were artist Roger Shimomura, news anchor David Ono, and spoken word artist Regie Cabico.

Concept:

Artist Roger Shimomura was the guest of honor. As a child he had lived in one of those camps, and his work explores what it means to be Japanese in America. The featured image is one of Shimomura's paintings, "Classmates" from a private collection, while the busts of the speakers are digital portraits after his style.
